This weeks book...

So this week book was called "Small Steps, Big Changes.  Eight Essential Practices for Transforming Schools Through Mathematics".  Our school is focusing on changing our math practice this coming year and I am suppose to be leading this so this book was calling my name.  It is written by a principal and coach and gives their experiences in changing teachers practice and raising test scores. It was a pretty good read.  Not too much new but I did take away a couple of good nuggets, mostly on how to question kids so they do more of the thinking!

  1. How is your school wanting to change their math program? What were you guys using before?

  2. I believe it is very important for our students to think more! This is a benefit of my school starting to use common core standards.

  3. Idaho is also implementing the Idaho Math initiative with Apangea Math to challenge students in this important area. The book sounds like an excellent "read," especially since math provides students with a different perspective than other content learning.

  4. Our school is moving to using a math workshop format and we are just adapting the Common core standards here in Washington. We want to change the way students think and work with math.

  5. Our school is moving to the common core standards for math this year, but I don't know the details of the switch. The teachers in our building really liked the books they were using, but those are out the window now with the new standards.
